A Season of Stories: Christmas at the White House 2003
November 19, 2015 - January 3, 2016
In 2003, Mrs. Bush selected “A Season of Stories” as the White House holiday theme, combining the wonder of the season with the delight of classic children’s stories that have shaped American culture.
The exhibit incorporated replicas of literary figures that were on display throughout the White House, White House holiday decorations, behind-the-scenes photos and video from the Archives, and more. The exhibit also included a 360° surrounding mural of the Blue Room with a full size reproduction of the 2003 official White House Christmas tree.
Just like the holidays, great stories have a way of bringing families together.
----- Laura Bush
White House Residence staff members designed, crafted, and decorated replicas of favorite children’s storybook characters to display throughout the White House in 2003. For the 2015 holiday season, these one-of-a-kind decorations – including characters and scenes from Clifford the Big Red Dog, Harry Potter, and the Cat in the Hat – were back on display in Dallas.
The beautiful 2003 White House Christmas tree, re-created for Museum visitors, showcases beloved literary figures on its ornaments. Like many families who decorate their trees with ornaments passed down from parents and grandparents, the 2003 Fraser fir was decorated with ornaments first used by Barbara Bush in 1989. The Christmas tree in the special exhibit featured many of these same ornaments.
